A Brief History as told by Calvin Lee, MD, copied from his FaceBook December 2015:

I am reminiscing about the humble beginnings of the SURGICAL ARTISTRY MODESTO MARATHON (SAMM): Dr. Harvey Palitz first told me about the idea in the locker room of Stanislaus Surgical Hospital in the summer of 2009. I said that I would be happy to help spread the word and get sponsors. Dr. Tammy Wu and I had always wanted a marathon for Modesto. We had run 2 marathons during our surgical residency. However, there was very little interest at that time regarding sponsors. A few months later around October 2009, Heidi Ryan and Mike Araiza stepped into the Surgical Artistry conference room and Dr. Tammy Wu & I wrote a check to turn the idea into reality. We were graciously involved in many of the meetings and the planning of the SAMM. Karen, right away designed a space-saving logo. Becky Li our graphics designer had told me long ago that consistency in the logo is key to branding and that we shouldn't separate the logo from the words Surgical Artistry as she had originally designed it. But I've never followed conventional wisdom. Then the day came to see a piece of marathon related clothing. The front had a really nice small SAMM logo, and the back had a huge logo and information from Sutter Gould. Sutter/Gould didn't want to help out with the title sponsorship but was willing to give the sweatshirt a try - we are very appreciative! This was the very first SAMM apparel made which I proudly wore everywhere. It was burgundy colored which is my favorite color too! And also from the very start in 2009, Vickie poured hours of work helping the marathon, and she eventually became the race director after Heidi had shaped it for 5 years. Mike Pascale in 2009 had been my friend for a few years already, had volunteered to be the official artist for the marathon. The first SAMM took place in 2010, and now we are on to the 7th annual installment which will happen on March 20, 2016.
